May 13, 2019: CIPA Hires Jennifer Rivera as Vice President of Public AffairsCalifornia Independent Petroleum Association (CIPA) Chief Executive Officer Rock Zierman is pleased to announce the trade association has hired Jennifer Rivera as vice president of public affairs. In this newly-created role, Rivera will be headquartered in CIPA’s new Los Angeles regional office and represent the industry’s interests in Southern California before elected officials and regulatory agencies in Los Angeles, Orange, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. She will also be responsible for developing relationships with and regularly engaging stakeholders outside of the oil and natural gas industry about production issues that may adversely impact the communities they represent. “CIPA continues to evolve to meet our members growing needs. January 3, 2018: CIPA Hires Sean Wallentine as Director of Strategic DevelopmentCalifornia Independent Petroleum Association (CIPA) Chief Executive Officer Rock Zierman is pleased to announce the trade association has hired Sean Wallentine to serve as the Director of Strategic Development. In this newly-created role, Wallentine will be directing CIPA’s Innovative Crude Methods Program which deploys renewable energy in the oil patch, advocating on behalf of CIPA members’ projects at state agencies, and leading CIPA’s federal advocacy at both federal agencies and in Congress. “Despite constant change at all levels of government to an already complex regulatory framework, California independent producers continue to provide affordable and reliable energy to all Californians. Sean will play a key role in assisting our members as they adopt new technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of production and helping our members navigate bureaucratic hurdles to responsible production,” said Zierman. Greasebook, an oil and gas software management company, is offering $500 scholarships for women currently or interested in working in the oil and gas industry. The $500 scholarship can be used toward educational and professional development goals including coding bootcamps, online programming courses and textbooks. The goal of the scholarship is to promote gender diversity in the oil and gas industry.
According to Greasebook, "We believe we can empower women aspiring to become not only top software engineers, but also to come out and involved in oil and gas, too."
All women ages 13 and older, with any levels of educational attainment, are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is an annual rolling scholarship. The 2018 deadline to apply is May 31 at 11:59 pm. Multiple scholarships will be awarded. Winners will be announced on or before June 30.

P. Anthony Thomas, executive director of the California Natural Gas Producers Association and director of government affairs for the California Independent Petroleum Association, discussed the benefits of investing in infrastructure development, such as the pipeline projects underway all over the country. Thomas stated, “Pipeline projects are the safest and most environmentally friendly way to deliver the nation's energy needs. Protecting domestic oil and gas production not only supports our nation's energy independence but also contributes to high quality careers and generates significant tax revenue."

Oil and gas producers are teaming up again for the second year of a program to provide graduating high school seniors exposure to the California oil and gas industry through a summer employment program.
E&B Natural Resources, California Resources Corporation (CRC), and Macpherson Oil Company are collaborating with California Independent Petroleum Association (CIPA) and several school districts throughout the state to provide graduating seniors a summer experience that will provide exposure to quality oil and gas industry career options available along the educational spectrum.

A federal judge has dismissed a case a small group of landowners filed in 2015 against state officials and energy producers (Committee to Protect Our Agricultural Water et al vs. Occidental Oil and Gas Corporation et al.). California Independent Petroleum Association (CIPA) Chief Executive Officer Rock Zierman issued the following statement after the court issued its order:
“We’re grateful the courts have ruled against this frivolous lawsuit. We always found it ironic that this small group of landowners are suing state officials who are enforcing the toughest oil production laws in the nation.”

California Independent Petroleum Association (CIPA) Chief Executive Officer, Rock Zierman, today issued the following statement after Alameda Superior Court Judge, the Honorable George C. Hernandez, Jr., released a final ruling in Center for Biological Diversity and Sierra Club vs. California Department of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources. CIPA was an intervenor in the case.
“Unbiased, independent scientific reviews have proven that responsible oil production can coexist with environmental protection. Activists with an agenda to stop all oil production continue to ignore the facts and have failed in three separate legal maneuvers. However, science and the courts have consistently sided with the facts, rather than the hyperbole of activists.”

Seniors from Bakersfield’s Independence High School Energy Academy will receive extra financial support after graduation thanks to local energy producers.
The Kern Energy Foundation awarded $5,000 in scholarships to thirteen deserving graduating seniors. The top prize was $1,000 and instructors were also awarded funding to purchase science kits which high school students use when they visit local elementary schools to educate younger students about the importance of energy.

CIPA created this new role to manage the increasingly complex regulatory requirements imposed on the oil and gas industry. In this role, Rivera will be responsible for the management of local, state and federal regulatory issues and developing relationships with government officials.

The role is a newly-created position for the non-profit, non-partisan trade association, which represents approximately 500 independent crude oil and natural gas producers, royalty owners, and service and supply companies operating in California.
